It is amazing how a little bit, relatively speaking, can have a very big
effect. You know they say, “It’s the little things that count...”
I have numerous patients/athletes who are anxious to lean down and lose some
body fat and or weight. Commonly, they are impatient and/or dissatisfied
with a 5 or 10 lb loss when it happens over a period longer than a few
months. Of course, I reassure them, and point out the significant
physiologic changes that need to occur for a 10 lb fat loss. Nevermind that
if they are on an solid workout plan they are also gaining muscle mass and
as they (also) say, “...muscle weighs more than fat!...”
So, let’s try out how much 10 lbs really is.
Your HomeWork for the remainder of this week is for one complete day to lug
around an extra 10 lbs (plus or minus).
Pick a day, any day between now and Sunday, and for the entire 24 hours
carry a ten pound dumbbell, medicine ball, etc. etc. And I mean carry it
with you EVERYWHERE! If you get up in the middle of the night to pee, carry
that weight with you. During the day toss the weight into a backpack and
lug it around while you go about your business.
If you absolutely cannot find a 10 lb dumbbell or medicine ball or something
of the like, then fill a gallon jug with water and carry that around instead
(about 8.5 lbs). How about wearing it while you go through your normal
workout?!?!?
Those of you who have been pregnant will have a sense of deja vu with this
HomeWork. Those of us who never have will have an extra appreciation for
them. And, we can all realize the extra burden of an extra 10 lbs of dead
weight on our body. Police officers carry around an extra few pounds with
them for up to 24 hours, and they have to deal with the often difficult
public, and ‘chase bad guys/gals’. This will help us appreciate them more
also?!?!?
Have an interesting and fun experience with this and see how well you can
carry it with you EVERYWHERE!
Have a great rest of the week,
MRoss
